As a first year veterinary student, my curriculum encompasses understanding of the normal anatomy (radiographic and gross), physiology, and histology of large and small mammals (as well as fish and birds). I�ve also completed coursework in parasitology, immunology, behavior and epidemiology. My current Clinical Orientation course covers the hands-on aspect of both general and systemic physical examinations of large and small animals, which includes vaccination sites, blood drawing technique and catheter placement. I�ve also done wet labs in nasogastric tubing, equine dentistry, shoeing the foal and lame horse, nerve blocking, and care of neonatal calves.

1998-2000 Pet Emergency Treatment Services (PETS) (Lancaster, Pennsylvania)

At PETS, I was responsible for initially assessing the animals, administering medications and vaccinations, drawing blood, running bloodwork, placing IV catheters, assisting in surgery, taking radiographs, and fielding clients telephone inquiries. This was a small animal/exotics/wild life emergency hospital that operated 24 hours over the weekend.

As a foal sitter, I was responsible for maintaining the integrity of foals IV and O2 lines, keeping them clean/dry, keeping them sternal, restraining them for medication treatments or blood drawing, assisting in turning foals, milking mares, and assisting with physical therapy. I also gained a sense of what common problems resulted from dystocia and premature births.

As an observer and assistant, I restrained horses for physical exams and vaccinations. I helped in taking radiographs, assisted with lameness exams and with non-surgical colic cases and gained a sense of what types of diseases, wounds, and lamenesses are commonly found in equine medicine.

As a pony club member, I gained insight into horse management, veterinary care, nutrition and different horse sports. In teaching younger members, I�ve gained confidence in expressing to others what�s occurring with their horses, and what they can do about it. I am currently still active, both in helping my own club and in serving on the national Dressage activities committee which promotes Dressage to pony club youths.
